We recently had the opportunity to learn more about Dr. Schrom, his approach, and the path that led him to pursue becoming a board-certified dermatologist.
Where did you go to college?
I received a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Life Sciences from Kent State University, and I received my Doctor of Medicine degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University.
What made you decide to pursue a career in dermatology?
Dermatology is both a medical and surgical specialty that incorporates cutting-edge medical advances into clinical practice while allowing you to care for patients of all ages. It was the perfect fit for someone like me who loved all the different facets of being a clinician.
What is your number one tip when it comes to taking care of your skin?
My number one tip is to focus on making healthy choices – eat right, exercise, stay away from vices, laugh as much as possible; and of course, wear your sunscreen. Our skin is a direct reflection of how we take care of ourselves and the health choices we make. You can nip, tuck, peel, and inject all you want, but there is nothing better for your skin than living a happy and healthy life.
What is your favorite aspect of being a dermatologist?
My favorite aspect is educating my patients and other providers. The knowledge that I learned was not meant to be hoarded; it was meant to be shared to help as many people as possible.
How would you describe your approach to treating patients?
Thoughtful, kind, and methodical. I try to meet the patients where they are, I acknowledge things are easier said than done, and I try to approach things in a stepwise manner as much as the situation allows.
If there is one thing you want your patients to know about you, what would it be?
I am here to make sure you get the care that is right for you. I will make recommendations and you will make decisions. Whether or not we agree on the next steps, I will be there to help support you along your dermatologic journey.
What do you like to do when you are not in the office treating patients?
When not treating patients, I love working out, experiencing new things, and investing time in family and friends. Life is short, so you have to make the most of it!
