April Chunling Deng, MD, PhD

Bio

Dr. April Chunling Deng, MD, PhD, Dermatopathologist, is board-certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology and has been providing dermatopathology services in the New England region since 2008. Dr. Deng has had multiple clinical appointments as a pathologist including UMass Memorial Medical Center, UMass Memorial Marlborough Hospital, UMass Memorial Health Alliance-Clinton Hospital, Quest Diagnostic in Massachusetts, and more. She has been a professor of Dermatopathology and director of dermatopathology training program at UMass since 2008 and served as the dermatopathology laboratory director in Dermatology Department at University of Maryland 2002-2007.

Dr. Deng completed her clinical fellowship in Dermatopathology at Ohio State University, and her residency in Clinic and Anatomic Pathology at the University of Rochester. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree and Master of Science in Pathophysiology from Hanan Medical University.

Dr. Deng has also received her PhD in Molecular Physiology from the University of Arkansas and has authored over 100 publications. Her professional memberships include the American Society of Dermatopathology, the International Society of Dermatopathology and the Chinese Dermatopathology Association.

When Dr. Deng is not at work, she enjoys traveling, reading, and listening to music. She is thrilled to provide industry leading dermatopathology for all Optima Dermatology patients!

Ian Rosenthal, MD, PhD

Bio

Dr. Ian M. Rosenthal, MD, PhD, is an experienced Board-Certified Dermatopathologist and has been providing dermatopathology services since 2015.

Dr. Rosenthal completed his Fellowship in Dermatopathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical College. Prior to Fellowship he completed his Residency in Anatomic Pathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Rosenthal also received his Doctor of Philosophy at The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, where he was responsible for developing the first new clinically approved drug combination for tuberculosis in over 50 years. He also completed postdoctoral work at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with a focus on the experimental chemotherapy of tuberculosis. Additionally, Dr. Rosenthal has authored over 40 dermatopathology publications and abstracts throughout his career and is also passionate about teaching and mentorship. He has led numerous teaching and tutorial sessions with Cornell Dermatology Residents and Johns Hopkins University medical students.

When he is not working, Dr. Rosenthal can be found spending time with his wife and two boys, playing classical guitar, and cooking new recipes from around the world. Dr. Rosenthal is thrilled to continue to provide patient centered dermatopathology for all Optima Dermatology patients.

Karen Nguyen Wu, MD, FCAP

Bio

Dr. Karen Nguyen Wu, MD, FCAP, Laboratory Medical Director & Dermatopathologist has been providing dermatopathology services in the New Hampshire region since 2013.

Dr. Wu completed an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia where she served as Chief Resident in her final year. Dr. Wu finished her Oncologic Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia before completing a Dermatopathology Fellowship at the world-renowned Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology in New York City. Dr. Wu graduated cum laude with her Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a minor in Asian Cultures & Civilizations from Muhlenberg College. Dr. Wu earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Drexel University College of Medicine as part of an early-admission program where she graduated as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Wu is board-certified in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology and Dermatopathology. Her professional memberships include the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society of Dermatopathology, the International Society of Dermatopathology, and the College of American Pathologists. Dr. Wu was named Castle Connolly Top Pathologist in New Hampshire magazine in 2022 and 2023, and she has authored over 10 dermatopathology publications.

Dr. Wu was born in Viet Nam and immigrated to the United States at an early age after spending time in refugee camps. She was raised in Philadelphia and moved to New England in 2013. In her spare time, Dr. Wu enjoys traveling with her family, exploring nature, trying new restaurants, and hitting the gym. Dr. Wu is thrilled to continue to provide industry leading dermatopathology for all Optima Dermatology patients.
